On the season finale of Sex Education season 2, Adam Groff, one of the most popular character on the Netflix hit show said to his critical father
“I want to find something that I’m good at”. To avoid spilling any more juice about this show for those who have still not seen the wonders that is SEX EDUCATION, I will only focus on that line. That line, oh! that glorious line. So simple but yet so profound.
It got me thinking, isn’t that what we are searching for? To find something we are good at?
Of course Adam’s insistence on finding something he’s good at stem from the fact that he seems to be bad at everything. However, it is still a genuine way to look at life. This is where originality lies. You hear people say things like “no one can do things the way you do it”. But how will you know this if you don’t find what you’re a good at?
I’m not good at crossword puzzles, or algebras or organic chemistry; although I can study hard and learn the techniques and figure out how to crush every crossword puzzles on the newspaper every morning. That is called hard work. If you work hard enough you can actually be good at something. But what is it that comes so naturally to you that you find yourself doing so effortlessly?
Think about it for a minute and then keep reading. Have you found it? Have you not? It is okay if you have not found something you are good at. You should not let the pressure get to you. These things take time and that is why you should see your life as a work in progress. Nothing is made overnight. You will find what you are good at and when you do, these are reasons why you should focus on it.
It is easier to stand out in a field you are naturally good at.
Social media has turned ordinary people into experts. That is why you are attracted to people once you read their Bio and then stick around when you like their contents. You start wondering how these people got so many influence and followings. It is because they are good at what they do. Think Beauty and who comes to your mind? Think music and who is the first person that stands out?
When you stick to what you know and do that thing well, your originality will evidently make you known.
It leaves you with option of exploring your abilities because you will want to be better at it.
After you find something that you are good at, you might want to consider getting better at it. Think about anything that has been around for a long time (even far back to years before you were born) I am very sure it has evolved from what it used to be. Take Advertisement industry for example, it has evolved from what it used to be when I was young girl to this digital age that we are in.
Your best ability will open doors for you.
This is genuinely my goal in life, that I can keep getting better at my craft and it will take me to places I can only imagine. If not for anything, this is why you should work on getting better. And how do you do this? You become consistent. In the beginning of the year, I said to myself. I am going to be consistent as a blogger and a photographer because I want to see what will happen. I am genuinely curious about the end result. I too want to reap the fruit of labour. I want to see where my diligence takes me. This is enough reason why I learn new things everyday about my craft. This is why I challenge myself with my photography. I know I’m not going to get better if I don’t push myself to try new techniques; that is why I started the photography challenge last month. The challenges helped me get better at certain things like shooting in direct sunlight and how to make the most of my beginner friendly camera.
