Here is how to come up with a creative way to turn your boyfriend to your photographer! Below are tips on how to get your non-photographer boyfriend to take amazing photos of you!!
It had been weeks since I attended Ake festival as a volunteer and I had been itching to create more digital content that I am proud of. I had this long list of ideas to work with but it all involved taking photographs. This was a problem because I do not have a tripod and cannot shoot in self-portrait mode. This had been my excuse for months during my final year and it ultimately delayed me from posting on my blog. I did not have images to back up my posts; being a visual storyteller means you have to incorporate visuals with your words. They complement each other in ways I cannot describe, at least as far as I am concerned. Why have one when I can have both?!
It had become clear that I could not afford a photographer that would take my pictures week-by-week and most of my friends who were photographers were not available in school. I could not wait any longer.
And this birthed this idea to ask my boyfriend to take my pictures. Here is the thing about this idea, my boyfriend is not a photographer. He rarely takes pictures of himself on his phone and telling him to take my pictures for my blog was a big deal. These were not selfies, these were supposed to be professionally clean photos. But he was my best chance so I had no choice and Id decided to ask him.
He did not even think about it twice, he agreed and we set up a day to find a place to take the pictures. So I got my outfit ready, did my makeup and put on my wig. We found a secluded pathway surrounded by green leaves which happens to be behind my hostel and he took my pictures. It did not take a while for him to get used to directing me on the poses and the best angles that complemented my face and body. There is a limited number of people who I am comfortable taking my pictures but Deji has easily become my favorite. Perhaps it was because I was comfortable around him and I did not worry about my stiffness. We were gisting between shots which made it less serious.
When I saw the pictures, I LOVED them!
I wondered why it took me all these while to let him do this. Of course Deji has been taking my regular pictures over the years most of them are on Instagram but these pictures were way better.

I hope these tips helped because these were what I learnt from this mini-shoot with Deji.
I love this mini-collaboration with my boyfriend which has inspired me to give out a space in my blog to discuss few things I’ve learnt since being in a relationship for a year and a half. I will be writing more about my love story and I am so looking forward to this new step in my blogging journey.
